100 new teachers sign into Champaign schools

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign schools are welcoming 100 new teachers with a celebration.

Wednesday marked Teacher Signing Day at Centennial High School, and it’s helping fill vacancies the district has been seeking. They still need another 100 teachers to bring the district’s staff to the numbers needed.

Administrators said the signing day event is a big step forward in filling vacancies. One new hire said there tends to be a lot of negative attention surrounding the teacher deficit, so it’s nice to have something to celebrate.

“These kind of events let us have the joy and celebrate being teachers, especially for all the new folks who are coming into the profession,” said Jaime Escatel, the new band director at Franklin STEAM Academy. “It’s really good to see that we are like one big family and we’re going to support them no matter what. It feels good to be welcomed. Celebrations are always nice.”

Administrators recently told parents some classes would have to begin with long-term substitute teachers due to the shortage. Unit 4 is the biggest district in their region, and the number of teaching vacancies matches the total vacancies from all other schools in the area.
