DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A Decatur bridge construction project that was expected to wrap up in just a couple days has now been extended by more than a month.
Replacement of the Grove Road Bridge over Lake Decatur has been going on since mid-March of this year. At the time, city officials said the project would complete on Aug. 9. But in the face of unexpected construction challenges, that finish line isn’t expected to be crossed until Sept. 20.
Officials said that underwater obstacles made for more difficult footings work and a delayed order for custom-fit beams. Construction cannot proceed until the beams arrive on Thursday.
On Facebook, the City of Decatur apologized for the delay. In the meantime, drivers are advised to continue using alternate routes like South Shores Drive and Southland Road.
