Haze and smoke Thursday afternoon with thunderstorms across southern Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Thursday, Utah! Code Orange air quality is once again a problem across the Wasatch Front this afternoon. This means the hazy skies are back in northern Utah as winds push the thicker smoke plume from Idaho this morning into north and central Utah this afternoon.

Isolated thunderstorms will once again develop with flash flooding remaining ‘Possible’ for all recreational areas. Daytime highs will remain slightly above seasonal averages for the state with mid to upper 90s expected along the Wasatch Front. St. George will see temperatures climb to 104 degrees.

We are still tracking a trough that will spread across the northern U.S., gradually cooling us down from all the recent record-breaking temperatures this weekend into next week.

Moisture will increase across the Beehive State during the latter half of Friday and continue over the weekend. By Sunday, temperatures will return to normal. Moisture will remain in the area through mid-next week, with a chance of strong to severe storms.

While afternoon thunderstorms will be possible across the state over the weekend and into the new work week, the highest risk for flash floods will be on Sunday and Monday.

Much of the moisture looks to begin to clear out by midweek and the threat of storms is expected to remain confined to areas of eastern Utah. Temperatures are forecast to stay close to seasonal averages, which we know you love to see. Stay tuned!
