SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A sister missionary serving in Haiti for the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died on Friday, Aug. 2, from medical complications, a church spokesman announced Tuesday.
Spokesman Sam Penrod said Jenny Lucas, 26, was serving in the Haiti Port-au-Prince Mission when she died from “what is believed to be sudden complications related to a preexisting medical condition.”
Lucas was from Pétion-Ville, Haiti, which is located 8 miles away from Port-au-Prince. She had begun her anticipated 18-month service at the beginning of the year.
Church officials did not provide additional information on the cause of her death.
“We send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Sister Lucas and the missionaries she was serving alongside,” Penrod said. “We pray they will each be comforted with the love and peace of the Savior during this time of mourning.”
The church — which is headquartered in Salt Lake City — reports approximately 24,900 church members in Haiti. The Pourt-au-Prince Mission boundaries encompass the entire country. Officials did not disclose where Lucas was serving within the country at the time of her death.
