WEST HAVEN, Utah (ABC4) — One person was shot and killed by police in a tragic incident in West Haven on Monday.
Lt. Terance Lavely with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to an apartment complex in the area of 2200 South and 1100 West on Aug. 5. A concerned family member had called dispatch reporting the individual was possibly under the influence of drugs, acting erratically, and threatening self-harm.
Deputies reported finding a “chaotic scene” upon arrival and began talking with the individual, who has not been publicly identified. According to Lavely, the person was in possession of a weapon with children inside the residence.
Details on the incident are limited, however, Lavely said the situation “escalated” and two Weber County Sheriff’s Office deputies opened fire. The individual was struck and sustained fatal injuries. They were pronounced dead on the scene by medical personnel.
Lt. Lavely said deputies were able to safely remove everyone from the apartment without any further injury. No deputies were reportedly injured in the shooting.
The critical incident protocol has been activated with the Weber County Attorney’s Office leading the investigation. The two deputies who fired their guns have been placed on leave, pending the investigation.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasize the availability of resources for anyone struggling with thoughts of self-harm,” said Lt. Lavely.
