PRICE, Utah (ABC4) — The Price man who was shot and killed by multiple officers last week allegedly brandished a weapon against law enforcement, according to police.
Patrick Frank Whitten, 31, of Price, was shot and killed on Tuesday, July 30, by officers who were responding to a domestic violence situation. According to the Department of Public Safety, officers had learned Whitten was potentially armed when they arrived on the scene.
The incident happened just after 11:30 p.m. Whitten had reportedly already left the home by the time officers arrived, but he was found outside nearby a short time later.
“When officers confronted him, he brandished a weapon,” The Department of Public Safety said in a press release. “In response to this threat, officers from multiple agencies fired. The 31-year-old male sustained critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital after being treated at the scene.”
The man, who DPS identified as Whitten, later died at the hospital.
DPS said officers from the Price City Police Department, Helper City Police Department, and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office responded to the domestic violence call. No officers were injured in the shooting.
The Utah State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer-involved critical incident. The Department of Public Safety said the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.
