SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The decade-old stations used by drivers parking on Salt Lake City’s streets are getting a much-needed facelift, bringing more conveniences to parking in the city.
The new pay station machines will feature several upgrades, according to Salt Lake City officials, including touch screens, multiple language options, and tap-to-pay through Apple and Google Pay. City visitors will still be able to pay for parking with cash, coins, physical credit cards, or through the ParkSLC mobile app.
Nearly 270 pay-to-park stations will be replaced throughout the fall season, starting on Monday, Aug. 12. Salt Lake City expects all machines to be upgraded by Thursday, Oct. 3.
Salt Lake City officials assured Utahns that parking rates would not be changing as part of the upgrade.
“We’re excited to offer residents and visitors an upgraded pay-to-park experience,” said Public Services Deputy Director Julie Crookston. The Salt Lake City officials said residents and visitors can expect a smoother downtown parking experience.
Pay stations throughout the city will be upgraded in waves, with the eastern part of the city getting the first facelift.
The second wave of upgrades will focus on pay stations east of Main Street around West Temple and near the Delta Center. Finally, crews will replace stations around downtown’s State Street and City Creek Center core.
Pay stations and certain parking spots will be closed with “No Parking” signage about 48 hours before the new machines get installed. Even if a nearby pay station is closed, Salt Lake City said drivers are still required to pay for parking either through the mobile app or by “walking a reasonable distance” to an available pay station.
Once the new machine has been installed, the “No Parking” signage will be removed and the new station will become available.
