CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – Central Illinois is no stranger to major road construction, however, issues can arise when road closures affect local organizations and businesses.
That was the case for Salt & Light, a local non-profit thrift and grocery store giving people in need easier and more affordable access to food and clothes.
The Champaign location is temporarily closed, but the Urbana location is still open.
Director of Retail Mike Jenkins said there were many factors along with the construction that finally made them shut the doors.
“When the road construction came in, the impact was already great to our customers. They just couldn’t get there,” Jenkins said. “The impact was great to our volunteers because they also couldn’t get there with the bus system. In addition to that, that building is not environmentally controlled. The excessive heat during the month of August is just horrific, which is one of the reasons we’re looking for another building.”
Jenkins added that the Champaign location was their first location and they’ll be looking for a new place in town to serve people better.
Those who were volunteering at the Champaign location are still eligible to work at the Urbana location.
