SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Wednesday, Utah! Yesterday we saw record-breaking heat in downtown Salt Lake City (100 degrees), SLC International Airport (104 degrees), Spanish Fork (102 degrees), and BYU Provo (103 degrees), but we hop on a cooling trend today.
The bottom line? Another dry hot day today, but a weekend cold front will knock temperatures back and bring more widespread thunderstorms.
Although temperatures are simmering down, it’ll still be 5-10 degrees above seasonal norms. Daytime highs will be in the upper 90s for most with a few spots like Salt Lake and Provo having triple-digit potential. Meanwhile, higher elevations will be in the upper 80s to low 90s while hot spots reach the mid 100s.
Mostly clear skies are in the forecast with increasing precipitation potential in south-central and eastern Utah with the introduction of daytime heat. There’s a chance a thunderstorm could stray into the St. George area today and through the rest of the week as monsoonal moisture lingers, but they’ll mostly favor higher elevations.
The north should stay fairly dry, maybe even a little too dry. There’s an elevated fire risk for the Wasatch Mountains today thanks to consistent westerly winds and low humidity. A Red Flag Warning will be in effect for the Wasatch Mountains today from noon through 9 p.m. Winds of 10-20 mph are expected with gusts up to 30, humidity will be as low as 10-20%.
Luckily, wet weather will make its way to the north soon enough. As we close out the workweek and get into the weekend we’ll see an uptick in moisture. A cold front is slated to move through over the weekend which could bring isolated thunderstorms across the Beehive State and knock down temperatures to average. We may continue cooling into the low 90s by next week, fingers crossed!
