DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Seniors in Danville are growing their health with the help of the community’s green thumb. It’s through a garden share program at the CRIS Healthy Aging.
Those 60 years or older can go in and grab a wide variety of fresh produce from fresh corn, tomatoes, and even flowers to take home. All the produce is grown by master gardeners in the community.
CRIS Healthy Aging Executive Director Lisa Miller said the program invites more than just seniors to participate. Anyone in the community can stop by their location in Danville and drop off fresh produce.
“We have families, farmers, home gardeners drop drop vegetables, fruit, flowers off all week long and that somebody starts in and they’re hungry,” Miller said. “We can fix them up. So to take home. So it’s amazing.”
Not only do they offer cooked meals and fresh produce, but the center also gives away recipes for the vegetables and fruits they take home. This program goes until the first Wednesday in October.
