Solar canopy project reaching finish line at Decatur Civic Center

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Six solar canopies are now standing tall at the Decatur Civic Center parking lot.

City officials say all that’s left for the $5 million summer project is electric work. Lighting will be installed underneath the panels to bring better visibility to the parking lot. The panels will also be connected to electric infrastructure, which will then allow them to start generating electricity to the Decatur Civic Center by the end of October.

On Facebook, the City of Decatur shared a time-lapse of the construction.

Decatur officials said the solar canopies won’t cost the city anything and will actually shave $100,000 off the annual energy bill. They added that a similar project could be on its way to the Decatur Public Library. Those details will soon be brought before the city council.

While work on this project wraps up, drivers and pedestrians should expect small parking sections to be fenced off. Otherwise, the parking situation is largely back to normal, city officials said.
