Springfield firefighters rescue cat from burning home

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A cat was rescued from a house fire in Springfield on Saturday.

The home was located near Donna Street and Mayden Avenue. Upon arrival, the Springfield Fire Department saw heavy, brown smoke coming from the building’s front and back doors, and pushing from the eaves. They began hosing down the fire from the inside.

City Water, Light & Power (CWLP) and Ameren were called to the scene to help shut off utilities. Firefighters also utilized a fire hydrant across the street to obtain more water.

Some crew members searched the home for occupants. No people were found. However, a cat was found and taken outside. Firefighters gave the cat oxygen and it was saved.

Three people are displaced as a result of the fire. Officials said the house was severely burnt in the room of origin and extension. There was also significant smoke and water damage throughout the first floor and basement.

No one was hurt.
