University of Utah shuts down campus parking lot, to be replaced with housing

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Two weeks before the start of the fall semester, the University of Utah said it would be permanently shutting down one of its parking lots.

On Monday, Aug. 5, fencing started to be installed around the Kahlert Village parking lot located just east of the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The parking lot has 350 parking spots, which will be replaced to help create “college town magic,” according to the University of Utah.

U of U officials said the lot will make way for new housing, food, and entertainment, among other student life spaces. More details about these projects are expected to be released in early 2025.

“We know this will create some inconvenience for students, faculty, and staff who live and work in this area,” said Jennifer Reed, the associate vice president for Auxiliary Services at the U. “But we are excited about a housing project that will contribute to the transformation and visitor life on campus.”

The University of Utah assured its students and staff that those 350 parking spots would not be lost. Leaders with the school’s commuter services noted that the Kahlert Village parking lot will be replaced – one-for-one – with space at lots in Research Park along Guardsman Way around Ft. Douglas and at the LDS Institute lot on South Campus Drive.

The 2024 fall semester for the University of Utah is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 19. As students arrive for the new semester, the university said it will announce additional parking options and expanded hours for the campus shuttle and U SafeRide services.

The University did not immediately provide details on when construction on the new housing project near Kahlert Village was scheduled for completion.
