MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Mattoon has razed seven run-down properties this year so far. Officials said the most recent demolition involved a more notable “eyesore.”
A small structure on Dewitt Avenue was torn down on Monday. The framework was simply comprised of three walls and a toilet.
“This demolition may seem minor, but it positively impacts our community’s appearance and pride,” city officials stated on social media. “Removing this blighted property helps beautify our streets and reflects our commitment to a cleaner and safer Mattoon.”
Additionally, they said they are listening to feedback from the community and plan to remove 12 to 15 more blighted properties through the rest of the year. City leaders have partnered with the Illinois Housing Development to beautify the area and set aside $130,000 for the effort. That money is coming from gaming terminals across town.
“When we have homes in the community that are dilapidated and aren’t looking great, they’re hurting other residents. They’re hurting our residents’ property values,” said Alexander Benishek, Mattoon Community Development and Planning Director. “And so, you know, it’s kind of a way how we’re sticking up for our residents and doing our best to protect their investment in our community.”
