Construction begins at I-72/57 interchange in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Transportation is starting work on the Interstate 72/57 interchange ahead of a larger reconstruction project that will begin next year.

IDOT officials said that starting Monday, crews will start building crossover pavement in the grass median of I-72. This initial start of construction will require the closure of the left lanes in both directions on I-72.

The crossover pavement will be used next year once construction begins on the bridges carrying I-72 over I-57. That project is expected to last over a year-and-a-half with an expected completion in the fall of 2026.

Drivers are advised to consider using an alternate route when traveling; if unable, drivers should expect delays at the interchange and allow for extra travel time. Drivers are further advised to pay attention to the conditions and signs in the work zone, obey the posted speed limit, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
